Luis Suárez’s future is in MLS. Or at least that’s the view of Grêmio president Alberto Guerra, who claims that the veteran striker rejected an offer from the Brazilian club because he intends to continue his career in the United States.

We made him an offer, which he turned down. Suárez was very grateful because it was a very generous offer, but his plan is to play in MLS. Our offer was higher than the ones he’s received from MLS, but it’s a life project for him,” stated Guerra. A variety of sources have linked Suárez with a move to Inter Miami, a club that is also interested in signing his former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi.

Suárez, who will play for Uruguay in the upcoming World Cup, has been without a club since leaving Nacional in his homeland at the beginning of November. The ex-Ajax, Liverpool, Barça and Atlético Madrid striker returned in July to the Montevideo outfit, where he started his career before signing for Dutch club Groningen in 2006.

During his second spell at Nacional, Suárez scored eight times in 16 matches, which included a brace against Liverpool – of Uruguay – in the Primera División championship playoff to help his team to the league title.

After moving to Europe, Suárez scored a total of 425 goals in 658 games in all competitions, including 59 for Barcelona in the 2015-16 season. The striker heads into the World Cup looking to add to his tally of 68 goals for Uruguay, which makes him the country’s leading goalscorer of all-time.
