After a one-year break with no in-person ceremony, the Golden Globes have returned.

While the message from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) last year was that the decision to cancel the ceremony was made because of concerns over the spread of covid-19, others point to a boycott by top actors, producers, and others involved in film and TV. Compounding the problems for the HFPA was that NBC, the network that had traditionally carried the event live, pulled out in solidarity with the boycott.

Once again, dozens of television shows, documentaries, and movies have been nominated for Golden Globes and Tuesday’s event is set to be hosted by comedian Jerrod Carmichael.

2023 nominations

The Banshees of Inisherin is the most nominated film with eight, including for best musical or comedy picture, director, screenplay, score and acting nominations for Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan. James Cameron’s sci-fi epic Avatar: The Way of Water, the biggest box office hit of 2022, was nominated for best drama picture and director.

In the television category, ABC’s Abbott Elementary leads with five nominations, including best musical or comedy series and nominations for actors Quinta Brunson and Tyler James Williams. Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph are both up for best supporting actress. House of the Dragon has been nominated twice: best drama and best actress (Emma D’Arcy). Star Wars series Andor got one nomination: best actor for Mexican Diego Luna.

Most nominations

Both HBO Max and Netflix led the way in the television category, getting 14 nominations each. Major contenders include HBO’s “The White Lotus,” “House of the Dragon” and “Hacks,” as well as Netflix’s “Wednesday,” “Ozark” and “The Crown.”

Completing the podium was Hulu TV with 10 Golden Globe nominations with nominated series including “Pam & Tommy,” “The Bear,” “The Dropout,” “The Patient” and “Only Murders in the Building.”
