The playoffs will determine the last three qualifiers for the Women’s Soccer World Cup to be held in Australia and New Zealand from July 20 to August 20.
The countdown to the next Women’s Soccer World Cup has already begun, with the much-anticipated competition being held from July 20 to August 20 in Australia and New Zealand. While 29 teams have already qualified to play in the top international tournament, another ten will fight it out to take the final three places, reserved in groups D, E and F.
Below we review which teams are in that battle to qualify and all those looking to be crowned champions of the world at the ANZ Stadium in Sydney.
Which teams have qualified for the 2023 Women’s World Cup?
The 29 teams qualified for Australia and New Zealand are already assigned to their respective groups and know their match schedule with only three opponents still needed to complete the picture.
Group A: co-hosts New Zealand, Norway, the Philippines and Switzerland.
Group B: co-hosts Australia, Ireland, Nigeria and Canada, the latter now involved in a conflict between the federation and footballers over budget cuts and wage inequality.
Group C: Spain, Costa Rica, Zambia and Japan.
Group D: England, Denmark and China, with a place yet to be assigned.
Group E: defending champions United States, Vietnam and the Netherlands, with another team yet to qualify.
Group F: France, Jamaica and Brazil, with the fourth team yet to be decided.
Group G: Sweden, South Africa, Italy and Argentina.
Group H: Germany, Morocco, Colombia and the Czech Republic.
Which teams are in the playoffs for the Women’s World Cup?
A total of ten teams, from six different continents, compete for the coveted last three places available to play in the Women’s World Cup. They are: Cameroon, Portugal, Thailand, Chile, Senegal, Haiti, Chinese Taipei, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay and Panama.
These playoffs, in the form of mini qualifying tournaments will be between February 18-23, taking place in New Zealand. The chosen stadiums are Waikato (Hamilton/Kirikiriroa) and North Harbor Stadium (Auckland/Tāmaki Makaurau).
How does the playoffs for the 2023 World Cup work?
The ten teams in the playoffs are divided into three groups:
Group A: Portugal, Cameroon and Thailand
Group B: Chile, Haiti and Senegal
Group C: Chinese Taipei, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay and Panama
Cameroon will face Thailand for the right to play Portugal in the Group A final, while Chile will wait for the winner of the Senegal-Haiti in Group B. In Group C, the winners of the duels between Chinese Taipei-Paraguay and Papua New Guinea-Panama will meet for a ticket to the World Cup.
