The line-up for the inaugural edition of FIFA’s expanded Club World Cup is steadily taking shape. After Fluminense’s victory over Boca Juniors in Saturday’s Copa Libertadores final, the Brazilians have become the 13th club to book their spot at the 32-team event, which is to be held in the United States in summer 2025.

Which other South American clubs have qualified?

Fluminense have filled the third of four 2025 Club World Cup places given to the winners of the Copa Libertadores between 2021 and 2024. The first-time South American champions join fellow Brazilians Palmeiras and Flamengo, the two previous victors in CONMEBOL’s elite men’s club tournament.

UEFA and CONCACAF’s qualified clubs

From Europe, the last three winners of the UEFA Champions League are the teams that have stamped their ticket to the US so far: Chelsea (2020/21), Real Madrid (2021/22) and Manchester City (2022/23). The continent’s total of 12 participating teams is to be completed by this season’s European champions, plus the top eight available sides in UEFA’s club rankings over the four-year period leading up to 2025.

It should be noted that a country’s clubs are ineligible to qualify via UEFA’s rankings if two or more of its teams have already reached the tournament by winning the Champions League. For example, no more Premier League sides will reach the Club World Cup unless one wins Europe’s top men’s club trophy this term.

In CONCACAF, Monterrey (2021), Seattle Sounders (2022) and Club León (2023) have all qualified by lifting one of the last three CONCACAF Champions Leagues. The region’s final two spots are to go to the winners of the 2024 CONCACAF Champions Cup, and a club representing the US as host nation.
