Champions League
Which teams have qualified for the 2024/25 Champions League knockout stages?
With two matchdays left in the league phase, the line-up for the Champions League knockout stages is starting to take shape.
After matchday six of the 2024/25 Champions League, two teams are now guaranteed at least a place in the tournament’s knockout phase playoff round.
Which teams are through in the UCL?
Following wins over Girona and Borussia Dortmund, respectively, Liverpool and Barcelona are both certain of at least a place in the top 24 of the Champions League’s new, 36-team league phase.
The top eight finishers will qualify automatically for the round of 16, while the teams in ninth to 24th will contest a playoff for a place in the knockout stage proper.
Liverpool edge Girona, Barça triumph in Dortmund
On Tuesday, Liverpool became the first team to guarantee progression in some form from the league phase, when Mohamed Salah’s 63rd-minute penalty gave the Reds a 1-0 win away to Girona.
The victory, which was Liverpool’s 150th in the European Cup, left Arne Slot’s league-phase leaders on a maximum 18 points - only the second time ever that the club has won its opening six games of a continental campaign.
On Wednesday, Barça then joined Liverpool in guaranteeing a top-24 finish when they were 3-2 winners away to Borussia Dortmund.
With five minutes left at Signal Iduna Park, Ferran Torres struck to clinch victory for Hansi Flick’s men, who now sit second in the table on 15 points, having won five and lost one of their first six games of the Champions League season.
With two games remaining in the league phase, the team in 25th place, Paris Saint-Germain, can no longer catch either Liverpool or Barça. The French giants, who surprisingly find themselves in danger of an early exit from the Champions League, have just seven points.
Which teams have been eliminated from the Champions League?
Three teams are now unable to make it into the top 24 of the league-phase standings. RB Leipzig, Slovan Bratislava and Young Boys have all been eliminated, having all lost each of their first six games.

When are the UCL knockout phase playoffs? When’s the round of 16?
The knockout phase playoffs are to be played on 11/12 February and 18/19 February, 2025.
The teams finishing ninth to 16th in the league phase will be seeded in the playoffs. As Liverpool are eight points ahead of 10th-placed Sporting CP, the Merseysiders are certain to be a playoff seed in the unlikely event that they end up dropping out of the top eight.
The winners of the eight two-legged knockout phase playoff ties will progress to the round of 16, also played in home-and-away format. The round of 16 is to be held on 4/5 March and 11/12 March.
