COPA AMÉRICA 2024
Which teams have qualified for the Copa América 2024 semifinals? Draw, fixtures, pairings, dates…
Lionel Messi and Argentina are in with a chance of back-to-back titles, while James Rodríguez is chasing his first senior trophy with Colombia.
The 16 initial participants at the Copa América 2024 have been whittled down to just four, with the semifinals set to take place on Tuesday July 9 and Wednesday July 10. As expected, Lionel Messi’s Argentina are still in contention, although only just, but Neymar-less Brazil were the highest-profile casualties in the quarterfinals.
Copa América 2024 quarterfinal results
La Albiceleste needed a penalty shootout to get past Ecuador in the first game of the last eight in Houston, Kevin Rodriguez levelling the match in injury time after Argentina had led for almost an hour. Messi missed the opening kick in the shootout but was saved by goalkeeper Dibu Martínez, who made two saves to send his team through.
Canada also qualified for the last four via a shootout, which followed a 1-1 draw against Venezuela in Arlington.
Colombia, meanwhile, made light work of defeating Panama in Glendale. James Rodríguez and Luis Díaz were among the scorers in a 5-0 rout.
Brazil were the victims of a third penalty shootout against Uruguay in Paradise. With Real Madrid star Vinícius Júnior also absent in addition to Neymar, they were unable to break down the opposition defence in a goalless draw, despite Nahitan Nández’s 74th- minute red card. Eder Militão and Douglas Luiz were unsuccessful from the spot, ending Brazil’s hopes of lifting the trophy.
