The Euro 2024 round of 16 takes place between Saturday (29 June) and Tuesday (2 July), by which point we will know which eight teams have reached the quarterfinals and remain in with a chance of being crowned European champions. All of the most fancied nations (England, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy) made it through the group stage, with the qualifications of Slovakia, Slovenia and Georgia arguably the biggest stories.
Defending champions Italy, however, fell at the first knockout hurdle, losing 2-0 to Switzerland, the first team to book their place in the last eight.
They have been joined by hosts Germany, who overcame Denmark in a weather-delayed clash in Dortmund and England, who were on the verge of being dumped out of the tournament by Slovakia in Gelsenkirchen. Harry Kane saved the day with a late equaliser to take the game to extra-time before Jude Bellingham (who else?) put the seal on a memorable win to make Southgate’s boys the third team to book a place in the quarter finals.
Nico Williams and Co fire Spain into the quarter finals
Spain made shorter work of their tie against Georgia to become the fourth. With Nico Williams in inspirational mode, Luis De la Fuente’s side eased to a comfortable 4-1 win and advance to the quarter finals as half of the bracket for the next round is now known.
Rodrigo, Fabián Ruiz, Nico Williams and Dani Olmo found the target for Spain, who last won this competition in 2012. La Roja made it to the semi-finals the last time around, can they go further at Euro 2024?
Mbappé captains France to Belgium victory
All eyes were on Kylian Mbappé once again in France’s last 16 fixture against Belgium on Monday, but it was Randal Kolo Muani who was the hero for the French as they secured a late triumph in Düsseldorf.
Teams through to the last 16 of Euro 2024
