Who are Mexico’s rivals in the Gold Cup quarter finals?
El Tri’s Gold Cup campaign continues. On Saturday, they will face one of their long-term Concacaf rivals in the Last 8.
Although for many, their recent performances have been a long way from their best, Mexico have managed to meet forecasts and are through to the next round of the Gold Cup 2023 as winners of their group. This weekend, El Tri will face an old acquaintance in the quarter finals where it will be a case of do or die.
As in previous editions, Mexico breezed through the group stage - qualifying top of Group B after beating Honduras and Haiti, and losing by the minimum to Qatar. Meanwhile, in Group C, Panama with seven points finished in top spot, followed by Costa Rica, who beat Martinique 6-4 in a frenzied goal fest - a result which booked their place in the next round.
Against who, when and where will Mexico play the quarter final?
Mexico will face Costa Rica at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on Saturday 8 July with the game kicking off at 9:30 p.m. EDT / 6:30 p.m. PDT (19:30 hours CST in Mexico). The quarter final clash between the Aztecs and Ticos will be another edition of what was once a Concacaf classic. The two nations have met six times in the tournament in previous years, Mexico have never lost to Costa Rica in the Gold Cup.
