Who are the top active goal scorers in Liga MX?
Only two Mexican players feature in the first five places of the ranking - just one player could creep into the all-time top 10.
Another week of action in the Apertura 2023 and with it, updates to the list of top scorers as well as the overall historical ranking in the Liga MX, in which some of the entries remain active.
Although only one of them is close to the all-time top 10 historical scorers in Mexican soccer. Most of the players who complement the list have long retired, or left for other leagues. Let’s take a look at the players still in activity who continue to make their way up both lists.
André-Pierre Gignac
Among the candidates for the best foreigner who has ever set foot in the Liga MX is Tigres striker André-Pierre Gignac. His goal in the 2-1 win against Cruz Azul at the weekend took his overall tally to 171 goals scored in the regular league tournament (196 in all competitions) and that for now allows him to position himself as the active player, with the most goals under his belt.
In the all-time list, he is now level with Enrique Borja in 14th place, who scored 171 goals for Pumas and Club América between 1964 and his retirement in September 1977. Gignac currently has four players ahead of him as he edges towards the top 10 - Horacio López Salgado (172), Ricardo Ferreti (184), Ricardo Peláez (188) and Sergio Lira (191). As it stands, the French forward needs another 20 goals to break into the top 10 - he’s under contract until June 2025 so has the time to do it.
Rogelio Funes Mori
After a campaign complicated by injuries, and with his regularity threatened by the arrival of Germán Berterame, Funes Mori remains the second active top scorer in Mexican soccer. The Rayados striker has racked up 130 goals between Apertura and Clausura tournaments.
Camilo Sanvezzo
With 96 goals since his arrival at Balompié Nacional and an enormous career in various clubs, the Brazilian forward, who returned to Querétaro (his first Mexican club) in July, is currently positioned as the third maximum active goal scorer in the top flight.
Jonathan Rodríguez
Now on the books at Club América, he lifted the title with Cruz Azul in 2021 and tried his luck in Middle Eastern football, spending six months alongside Cristiano Ronaldo at Al-Nassr. Also known as ‘El Cabecita’, the Uruguayan totals 88 goals between regular seasons and playoffs (he found the net in the 4-3 win against Santos at the weekend) in six years as a player in Liga MX, enough to label him as the fourth highest active scorer.
Elias Hernández
Last but not least is Elías Hernández. At 35 years old and with extensive experience in Mexican soccer, the León No.11 is the only player born in Mexico in the ranking, as the fifth top scorer in activity with 83 goals in Liga MX.
