Time is ticking on the 2024 MLS regular season with just five games remaining for most teams. This midweek, matchday 33 was staged with Inter Miami still the team to catch as they look to claim the club’s first ever Supporters’ Shield. A late equaliser from Miranchuk denied Tata Martino’s men a win against Atlanta United as part of a 2-2 draw with the minor slip-up offering LA Galaxy a golden opportunity to close ground on the Herons in the fight for the Supporters’ Shield.
The Galaxy made the trip to Oregon to face Portland Timbers and were dealt a devastating blow falling (4-2) and Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino’s team are now on 63 points and Greg Vanney’s squad remains in second in the overall standings with 55 points.
Although they had beaten LAFC (4-2) in ‘El Tráfico’ at the weekend and with confidence levels high, the Galaxy were outclassed at Providence Park with goals from Jonathan ‘Cabecita’ Rodríguez, Evander da Silva (double) and Felipe Mora for the home side with Gabriel Pec and Joseph Paintsil getting on the scoresheet for the Los Angeles outfit.
FC Cincinnati make late push
FC Cincinnati took advantage of Inter Miami’s slip-up to move within eight points of the Herons after the TQL Stadium side defeated Minnesota United (1-2) at Allianz Field with goals from Yuya Kubo and Luca Orellano.
Pat Noonan’s team now has 55 points in the Eastern Conference, the same tally as LA Galaxy have at the top of the Western Conference but it would take a spectacular implosion from the Florida side for either the Galaxy or the ‘Orange and Blue’ to deprive Tata Martino’s side from claiming the Supporters’ Shield for the 2024 season.
