Gonzalo Higuaín announced in tears in a press conference that he will hang up his boots at the end of the 2022 Major League Soccer campaign at the age of 34. The former Argentina international wants to lift one more trophy before retiring and he is helping Inter Miami CF make a late push to qualify to the playoffs.

Inter Miami thinking about the future

With Gonzalo Higuaín confirming that he will not return next season, the David Beckham-owned franchise will have a designated player spot open in 2023. It has been reported that they will go on and make an offer to Luis Suárez during the winter transfer window to replace the most lethal striker in the league at the moment.

This will be an ideal transition for Inter Miami CF because they have similar qualities and play a similar role on the pitch. With the style of play that manager Phil Neville has implemented in his second year in charge, it will help Suárez adapt quickly to the team and Major League Soccer.

Suárez already confirmed that he will part ways with boyhood club Nacional in November and will become a free agent. The 35-year-old also expressed his desire to play in Major League Soccer and that he has serious offers on the table from various clubs, but he will analyze them at the end of the FIFA World Cup campaign.

What is next for Inter Miami?

Gonzalo Higuaín has been in peak form this season with 14 goals and three assists in 26 appearances. Thanks to the 34-year-old’s latest performances, Inter Miami CF sit in seventh place in the standings in the Eastern Conference and they will play their two regular season games this week.

They will go on the road to play against their in-state rivals Orlando City on Wednesday night and on Sunday they will host CF Montréal on Decision Day. Two wins will guarantee a playoff appearance this campaign for Inter Miami and Higuaín wants one last opportunity to win a title in MLS.
