MEXICAN NATIONAL TEAM

Who has the best record as Mexico manager this century?

There are definitely some surprises on the list of Mexico’s top managerial performers.

There are definitely some surprises on the list of Mexico’s top managerial performers.
Juan Luis Diaz

As incredible as it may sound, the bare honesty of statistics shows that, over the last 23 years, Gerardo Martino and Juan Carlos Osorio have the highest performance percentages over all other Mexico managers.

The numbers of the coaches, who both left the role via the back door, beat those of managers such as Javi Aguirre, José Manuel de la Torre, Miguel Herrera and Ricardo Lavolpe. These are the managers that get closest to those who guided Mexico through the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

Javier Aguirre won almost 70% of his games as Mexico boss across 2 stints.

Which Mexican manager has the highest win percentage?

It is indeed true that when the time comes to judge those coaches who came after Adolfo Frías Beltrán, who was the first ever Mexican National Team manager in 1923, 100 years ago, Mexican fans can certainly say that they have both exceeded expectations as well as come below them.

In terms of the figures, Tata Martino took charge of 66 games as Mexico manager, winning 40 and only behind Ignacio Trelles in terms of number of wins. Trelles managed over 100 games, meaning that the Argentine’s win percentage is much higher. Meanwhile, Juan Carlos Osorio, in 44 games, won 27: a 67.4% win rate, just below Tata with 67.7%.

After the two at the top sits Javier Aguirre. Across his two stints from 2001-02 and 2009-10, he recorded a 67.2% win percentage with the Mexican side. He won 36 of 59 games, meaning he came incredibly close to beating the two table leaders. José Manuel de la Torre, for his part, as ludicrous as it seems given his stint as boss, managed to get a 65.9% win rate with El Tri, winning 27 of 47 games.

Who has the lowest win percentage?

After that comes Ricardo Lavolpe with 61% (38 wins in 71 games) and finally Miguel Herrera who won just 18 of 36, meaning he has a 60% return rate.

Now it is time to see where Diego Cocca fits into this leaderboard; with 1 win from one game, he is doing well, but it is too early to judge. The main thing to remember is not to judge too quickly, as this is the man the FMF have chosen to lead Mexico to the 2026 World Cup.
