Reigning World Cup holders Argentina will book their place in the quarterfinals of the Copa América 2024 with a second successive Group A win against South American rivals Chile at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Tuesday (25 June). Lionel Messi and Co began their campaign with a comfortable 2-0 win against Canada in Atlanta, while the Chileans could really do with a positive result after being held to a goalless draw by Peru in Arlington in their opener.

Who is Andrés Matonte?

CONMEBOL have appointed Andrés Matonte as the referee for the matchday two clash in East Rutherford. The 36-year-old Uruguayan official is no stranger to the big stage, having been selected to officiate in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Matonte was the man in the middle for the Croatia’s 4-1 Group F victory over Canada, and was also named as the fourth official for Senegal vs the Netherlands in Group A, as well as the round-of-16 tie between the Dutch and the USMNT.

He has also taken charge of matches at the FIFA Club World Cup in 2023, the Copa Libertadores and CONMEBOL 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, including Colombia’s win over Brazil last November.

After first training to become a referee at the age of 20 in 2008, Matonte, a physical education teacher by trade, made his debut in the Uruguayan Primera División in 2017.
