Borussia Dortmund head coach Edin Terzic is well aware that the Germans are major underdogs in today’s Champions League final at Wembley, where they meet 14-time European champions Real Madrid. However, he believes the one-off nature of the showpiece event can help Dortmund to upset the odds.

“We know that [Madrid] are for sure the most successful team in this competition by far,” Terzic told his pre-match press conference on Friday. “And if you see only this season, they only have two defeats. But we also see that we are ready to compete on the highest level and we’ve always said: If you play ten times against Real Madrid, it’s going to be very difficult. But if you break it down to one game, and this is what you do when you go to the final, then everything is possible.”

Who is Dortmund head coach Edin Terzic?

Terzic, who has spent most of his coaching career with Dortmund, is now one step away from becoming only the second man to lead the club to the European title, after the legendary Ottmar Hitzfeld in 1997. Victory against Madrid would win Terzic’s second piece of major silverware as Dortmund head coach, and the first since he was appointed as boss on a permanent basis two years ago.

Having spent an unremarkable playing career as a forward in Germany’s lower-league game, the 41-year-old first joined Dortmund’s backroom team as a scout and youth coach in 2010, working under future Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp. After spells on the coaching staff at Besiktas and West Ham United, Terzic then returned to Dortmund to become an assistant to then-head coach Lucien Favre.

When Favre was sacked at the end of 2020, Terzic was promoted to the role of interim head coach, guiding Dortmund to victory in that season’s edition of the DFB-Pokal, Germany’s major cup competition. Terzic then made way for Marco Rose in summer 2021, leaving the dugout to become Dortmund’s technical director - but was again handed the first-team reins, this time as full-time boss, in the wake of Rose’s departure after just one season at the helm.

How much does Terzic earn as Dortmund boss?

Terzic, who is of Bosnian and Croatian heritage, signed a three-year contract when he took over in May 2022, agreeing a deal that pays him a reported €3.5 million a year ($3.8 million). That’s around a third as much as his opposite number in the Champions League final, Carlo Ancelotti, is estimated to be on at Madrid.

Deprived of 22/23 league title on final day

Having finished third in the Bundesliga during Terzic’s six-month spell as caretaker in 2020/21, Dortmund came heartbreakingly close to winning their eighth domestic title in 2022/23, his first full season on the Signal Iduna Park bench.

Leading the table heading into the final day of the league campaign, BVB could only draw at home to mid-table Mainz - a result that allowed Bayern Munich, who beat FC Köln, to leapfrog them at the top.

This season, Terzic’s Dortmund came a disappointing fifth in the Bundesliga; however, they are nonetheless guaranteed a spot in next term’s revamped Champions League, as Germany has been given an extra berth in the competition.
