Veteran Daniele Orsato will take charge of England and Switzerland’s Euro 2024 quarter-final in Düsseldorf today, in what could be the Italian’s final game as a referee.

Orsato set to retire after “wonderful experience”

Orsato revealed earlier this year that he is to hang up his whistle at the end of this summer’s European Championship. “I’m coming to the end of a wonderful experience,” the 48-year-old told Sky Sports Italia, adding: “After the last match, I’ll blow the whistle with the same determination that I’ve always been characterised by. I’m really proud of what I’ve done and I’ll give my all until the end.” In May, he was seen shedding tears on the Parc des Princes pitch, having closed out his Champions League career in Borussia Dortmund’s semi-final second-leg victory over Paris Saint-Germain.

How many games has Orsato refereed at Euro 2024?

Poised to oversee his fourth match at Euro 2024, Orsato has already crossed paths with both England and Switzerland at the tournament. He was appointed to the Three Lions’ 1-0 win over Serbia on the opening matchday of Group C, before running the rule over Switzerland’s 1-1 draw with hosts Germany in the final round of Group A games.

Orsato was then the man in the middle for Portugal’s penalty shootout win over Slovenia in the last 16. So far in Germany, he has shown 12 yellow cards in his three run-outs, although a third of his bookings came during Portugal and Slovenia’s extra-time period. In regular time, he averages under three yellows a game at Euro 2024. He is yet to send any players off at the tournament.

Orsato was also on the roster of referees for the covid-delayed European Championship in 2021, taking charge of three matches. They included England’s 1-0 win over Croatia on matchday one of the group stage.

In the global international game, Orsato refereed three matches at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Most notably, he was handed the semi-final tie between Croatia and eventual tournament winners Argentina. Four years earlier, he was a video assistant referee for six games at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where his assignments included Switzerland’s 1-0 group-stage defeat to Sweden.

In club soccer, Orsato made his Serie A debut in 2006, going on to make a total of 289 appearances in Italy’s top flight. He was chosen as the referee for the Coppa Italia on three occasions.

He began refereeing in the Champions League in 2012, and is now joint-fourth on the list of whistlers with the most appearances in Europe’s top club competition. Per the stats website Transfermarkt, his tally of 55 Champions League games is bettered only by Felix Brych, Björn Kuipers and Kim Milton Nielsen. In 2020, Orsato was appointed to the Champions League final in Lisbon, where Bayern Munich beat PSG to win their sixth European title.
