Swedish referee Glenn Nyberg will take charge of a heavyweight last-16 clash at Euro 2024 today, as France face Belgium in Düsseldorf.

How many Euro 2024 matches has Nyberg refereed?

This will be the third game that Nyberg has overseen at this summer’s European Championship. He was the man in the middle for Romania’s 3-0 win over Ukraine in the first round of Group E games, before being handed Spain’s 1-0 victory over Albania on matchday three of Group B. He showed just five yellow cards across those two run-outs, and is yet to send any players off in Germany.

Nyberg has also served twice as the fourth official at the tournament: for France’s 0-0 draw with the Netherlands in the second round of Group D games, and for Belgium’s matchday-three clash with Ukraine in Group E. That game also ended goalless.

After officiating at Euro 2024, Nyberg is line to get further international action, as the 35-year-old has been named among the referees for the Paris Olympics soccer competition.

Nyberg angers Bayern over UCL handball decision

Having made his debut in the top flight of Swedish men’s soccer in 2013, Nyberg has gone on to officiate in all three of the male game’s major European competitions. He made his debut in the continent’s elite tournament, the Champions League, in 2022.

In his most recent Champions League appointment, a 2-2 quarter-final first-leg draw between Arsenal and Bayern Munich in April, he made headlines with a penalty call that attracted the Germans’ ire. In the 66th minute at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhães picked the ball up in the box, not realising that play had already restarted. However, the referee opted against punishing the Brazilian over the misunderstanding.

“For me, for all of us, he made a huge mistake not giving the handball penalty,” then-Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel complained post-match. Tuchel added: “What makes us really angry is the explanation on the field. He told our players that it is a ‘kid’s mistake’ and he will not give a penalty like this in a quarter-final. This is a horrible, horrible explanation. He is judging handballs. Kid’s mistake, adult’s mistake. Whatever. We feel angry because it is a huge decision against us.”
