Born on August 1, 1973, in Englewood, New Jersey, Berhalter had a successful playing career that included stints in Major League Soccer and European leagues. He played as a central defender and was known for his leadership on the field.

His coaching journey took him to various clubs, both in the United States and abroad. Notably, he served as the head coach of the Columbus Crew in MLS, where he made a significant impact. Under his guidance, the Crew played an attractive style of soccer and achieved some success.

Greg Berhalter’s turn at managing the USMNT

Gregg Berhalter was appointed in 2018 shortly after the USMNT’s failure to qualify for the World Cup in Russia. Following that disastrous run at qualifying, Berhalter was chosen to rebuild a squad that was in total shambles and start to pave the way for Qatar.

His first win as a head coach came on January 27, 2019, when he led his team to a win against Panama. Later with Berhalter the helm the USMNT won the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

However, his term hasn’t been without criticism. A segment of US supporters has chastised Berhalter for allegedly favoring domestic-based players, with many feeling that his tenure as head coach of the Columbus Crew led to his developing a bias for MLS stars.

Copa América 2024

The 2024 Copa América is a crucial test for Berhalter and the USMNT. Hosting the tournament adds extra pressure, as fans expect a strong showing from the American team. Berhalter’s tactical acumen, man-management skills, and ability to motivate players will be put to the test.

Berhalter has a talented pool of players at his disposal. Stars like Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie. The Copa América provides an opportunity for these young talents to showcase their abilities on a big stage.

As the 2024 Copa América unfolds, all eyes will be on Gregg Berhalter and the USMNT. Can they make a deep run in their home tournament? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: Berhalter’s leadership will play a pivotal role in the team’s success.
