Who is Quéretaro hero Fernando Tapia?
The goalkeeper became the hero of the day for Quéretaro in the penalty shootout against the New England Revolution.
Against all odds, Querétaro are still alive in the Leagues Cup. The Gallos Blancos have made it to the quarter final round after eliminating the New England Revolution. One of Quéretaro’s star players on the night goalkeeper Fernando Tapia, who saved two penalties in the shootout which the Liga MX side won 4-3 after it had ended 1-1 on 90 minutes.
Who is Fernando Tapia?
The young goalkeeper was born in Villermosa, Tabasco, northern Mexico. He is 22 years old, 1.85 meters tall and has only been on the books with the Gallos Blancos since last month. He is only with Querétaro on loan until December and could even return to his parent club, América, before than if coach André Jardiné decides to call him back.
He has been in the Coapa team’s youth ranks since the 2017-18 campaign, according to Transfermarkt. In 2022-23, he was playing in the Expansion League with Vendados Mérida but returned to the capital team and later moved to Querétaro.
Tapia was part of the Mexico Under-23 Team with which he won gold medal in the recent Central American and Caribbean Games. Due to his good performances, the Gallos Blancos set their sights on him and secured a loan deal with América.
