Uruguayan Andrés Matonte will be the referee for Croatia and Canada’s Group F clash on Sunday, as the Canadians bid to avoid elimination from World Cup 2022.

After a 1-0 defeat to Belgium in their opening game on Wednesday, the Canucks - who are at the tournament for the first time since 1986 - will be knocked out if they lose to the Croats.

2018 runners-up Croatia, who are competing at their third straight World Cup, began their campaign in Qatar with a 0-0 draw against Morocco.

Croatia vs Canada: the match officials

A FIFA international referee since 2019, Matonte is officiating at his first World Cup. The 34-year-old was the fourth official for the Netherlands’ 2-0 Group A win over Senegal on Monday, but is yet to take charge of a match at Qatar 2022.

Matonte’s assistant referees for Croatia vs Canada will be fellow Uruguayans Nicolás Taran and Martin Soppi, while the fourth official will be Peru’s Kevin Ortega.

The video assistant referee (VAR) will be Argentina’s Mauro Vigliano, and the assistant VAR will be Uruguayan Leodán González. The offside VAR will be Gabriel Chade of Argentina, and the support VAR will be Chile’s Julio Bascuñán.
