After Sunday’s action saw England and Spain reach the Euro 2024 quarter-finals with wins over Slovakia and Georgia, respectively, we’re now at the halfway point of the last 16. Day three of the knockout stages features three big-name teams, and an outsider enjoying its deepest ever run at a major tournament.

Today’s games at Euro 2024:

France vs Belgium - 12 noon ET/9am PT, Düsseldorf

France head into the knockout stages having uncharacteristically failed to win their group; the last time this happened to Les Bleus at a European Championship or World Cup was back in 2012. Didier Deschamps’ men, who came into Euro 2024 as second favourites, have not managed to fire so far in Germany.

Indeed, France scored just twice - an own goal and a penalty - in the process of winning only one of their Group D matches. After edging to a 1-0 opening-game win over Austria when Max Wöber put through his own net, the French were then held to a goalless draw by the Netherlands, before a 1-1 stalemate with already-out Poland allowed the Austrians to snatch top spot.

Belgium were also runners-up in the round-robin stage, recovering from a shock matchday-one defeat to Slovakia to claim second place in Group E - a section in which all four teams finished with four points. A 2-0 win over Romania, followed by a 1-1 draw with Ukraine, allowed the Red Devils to finish ahead of Slovakia and the Ukrainians on goal difference.

Belgium are aiming to reach the quarter-finals of the Euros for the third time in a row, but have never previously beaten France at a major finals. The French have won all four such meetings - most recently at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where Samuel Umtiti’s goal gave the eventual tournament winners a 1-0 semi-final victory.

Portugal vs Slovenia - 3pm ET/12 noon PT, Frankfurt

Portugal reached the last 16 by winning Group F, victories over the Czech Republic and Turkey sealing top spot with a game to spare. However, the Seleçao finished the group stage with a surprise 2-0 defeat to Georgia, albeit head coach Roberto Martínez named a much-changed side for that game.

While the Portuguese have now reached the knockout stages at nine of the last 10 major tournaments, Slovenia have made it out of their group for the first time. Matjaz Kek’s men drew all three of their games in Group C, and three points proved enough to send them through as a best third-placed finisher.

Portugal are the overwhelming favourites to win today’s last-16 tie: per Oddschecker, the 2016 European champions are priced at -300 to advance, compared to Slovenia’s odds of +900. It is the Slovenians who won the teams’ only previous meeting, though. In March this year, goals by Adam Gnezda Cerin and Timi Elsnik gave the underdogs a 2-0 victory in a Ljubljana friendly.
