It’s the moment of truth. After the group stage, the best 16 teams in the tournament are headed to the round of 16, where losers will be sent home and winners will advance to the quarterfinals.
Spain has been the best team in the event, winning all their games and playing great soccer. Germany and Portugal, two of the main candidates to lift the trophy, have met the expectations. However, Cristiano Ronaldo’s team lost to Georgia once securing the first spot in the group.
France and England have been disappointing, with the current World Cup runners-up unable to finish top in their group and England suffering in every match to finish first in their section by a small margin.
Romania, Slovenia, and Austria have been the standout teams in Euro 2024, with Ralf Rangnick’s players taking Group D’s top spot.
Euro 2024: what games are on Saturday 29 June?
Two games will be played today, Saturday 29. The first one will be an interesting Switzerland vs Italy. The neighbor national teams will go head-to-head after Murat Yakin’s men ended in Group A’s second place, being one of the most solid teams in the tournament so far. They were virtually leading the standings in the third and final group stage game against Germany, but Die Mannschaft secured the top spot by tying the game in the final moments of their game.
Meanwhile, Italy suffered more than expected to take Group B’s second place. After digging deep to beat Albania in their opening game, they lost to Spain and grabbed a last-minute draw against Croatia that saw them qualify as the second-best side in their section behind La Roja.
The other match of the day is the one between host nation Germany and Denmark. Julian Nagelsmann’s side, with wins over Scotland and Hungary, and a hard-fought draw against Switzerland were Group A’s best team. They impressed in their first game and recorded a good performance against the Hungarians, but they didn’t look unbeatable against their neighbors. However, they are big favorites against Denmark, who probably struggled more than expected to take Group C’s second spot.
