Who scored more goals in the 2022/23 season: Erling Haaland or Kylian Mbappé?
The Manchester City striker and the Paris Saint-Germain battled until the final game of the season to be top scorer for club and country.
The 2022/23 season officially came to an end in Europe on Tuesday with fourth round of fixtures in qualification for the 2024 European Championships, which will be held in Germany next year. And, as is to be expected, Cristiano Ronaldo and Erling Haaland were two of the main protagonists, 24 hours after Kylian Mbappé had also been in the headlines.
The battle between the Norwegian and French stars to finish the season as Europe’s top goalscorer for both club and country went down to the last game, and it was the Manchester City striker who just managed to pip the Paris Saint-Germain attacker to the post thanks to his performance in Norway’s Euro 2024 qualifier against Cyprus.
How many goals did Mbappé score in 2022/23?
On Monday, Mbappé had drawn level with Haaland on 54 goals for the season after scoring a re-taken penalty in France’s win over Greece. What could the former Borussia Dortmund forward do in his ‘game in hand’?
How many goals did Haaland score in 2022/23?
Haaland didn’t disappoint, scoring twice - including one from the penalty spot in the space of five minutes - as his country eased to a 3-1 victory over Cyprus, reaching 56 goals in all competitions across the campaign for City and Norway, two more than Mbappé.
How many club trophies did Haaland and Mbappé win?
Although it was ultimately a close-run thing on an individual level, collectively, there can be little doubt that Haaland has enjoyed a more fruitful season, especially at club level.
While Mbappé lifted the Ligue 1 trophy with PSG, who made rather harder work of it than they should’ve done, Haaland won the continental treble (Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup) in his first season with the Citizens. On top of that, the now France captain suffered the disappointment of losing to Argentina in the World Cup final, despite scoring a hat-trick.
