Club América produced a ruthless display in the first leg of their CONCACAF Champions Cup last-16 clash against Chivas Guadalajara, winning 3-0 to put one foot in the quarter-finals.

At Estadio Akron on Wednesday, goals by Julián Quiñones, Diego Valdés and Henry Martín left Chivas needing a minor miracle to prevent their arch rivals from advancing to the last eight, where either Costa Ricans Alajuelense or MLS club New England Revolution will be waiting.

Revolution set for Champions Cup quarters

Alajuelense and New England’s last-16 tie also looks all but over after the first leg. The Revolution ran out 4-0 winners in the opener in Foxborough, Tomás Chancalay grabbing a brace either side of strikes by Nicolás Lima and Esmir Bajraktarevic.

New England’s thumping first-leg victory led to the sacking of Alajuelense head coach Andrés Cerevic, who has since taken over at Mexican club Puebla. The Costa Ricans have replaced Cerevic with Alexandre Guimaraes.
