Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami will face Orlando City in the 2023 Leagues Cup round of 32, after their Florida rivals beat Santos Laguna to progress to the knockout stages as group winners.

Wilder Cartagena’s stoppage-time strike gave Orlando a 3-2 victory over Santos at Exploria Stadium on Saturday, as Óscar Pareja’s men finished two points clear of Houston Dynamo at the top of Group South 2.

Inter Miami stroll into Leagues Cup last 32

Earlier this week, Inter Miami had confirmed their qualification as winners of Group South 3, sealing a perfect round-robin stage by thumping Atlanta United at DRV PNK Stadium.

Having marked his Miami bow by scoring a last-gasp free-kick to beat Cruz Azul in the team’s Leagues Cup opener four days earlier, Messi netted two and set up one against Atlanta on Tuesday, as the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner’s first start for the Herons brought a 4-0 triumph.

Messi’s former Barcelona team-mate, Sergio Busquets, also made his full Miami debut in the victory over Atlanta.
