Boca Juniors booked their place in this year’s Copa Libertadores final after beating Palmeiras on penalties.

The Argentine giants now have the chance to match Independiente’s record of seven Libertadores titles. Fluminense await the team from Buenos Aires in the final next month, with the Brazilian outfit looking for their first Libertadores title.

Cavani opens the scoring

Boca broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute in Sao Paulo when Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani slid in to find the back of the net from close range.

Future Real Madrid forward Endrick came on for Palmeiras as they looked to shift the flow of the game, before Boca centre-back and former Manchester United player Marcos Rojo saw red in the 66th minute for a lunging challenge.

Palmeiras equaliser

Palmeiras’ equaliser eventually came when Joaquín Piquerez fizzed an effort from 25 yards which took a deflection; Sergio Romero in the Boca goal got a touch on the shot but it crossed the line and the Brazilians were back in the contest.

Cavani had a chance to seal the victory for the side from the capital but slipped as he struck. There is no extra-time in the competition, so both sides prepared themselves for the dreaded penalty shootout.

Eventually, it was Boca’s Guillermo Fernández - with millions across the continent watching - who stepped up to score the winning spot-kick to send the Bombonera outfit into another final.

Copa Libertadores final

Fluminense of Brazil eliminated Internacional 4-3 on aggregate and will play Boca in South America’s biggest club match of the year.

When and where will the Copa Libertadores final be played?
