The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup is officially under 100 days away, and the U.S. Women’s National Team enters the Tournament on an eight-match win streak. The defending champions will be going after another victory this July in Australia and New Zealand.

The 32-team field for the Women’s World Cup has been set following February’s play-in tournament. Portugal, Haiti, and Panama secured the last three spots, in addition to the 29 teams that had already been classified. This year’s World Cup will be the biggest one yet, as it will be the first time the Tournament features 32 teams – eight more than in 2019. A number of nations will make their debut, including Vietnam, which takes on the USWNT in its opening group-stage match on July 22 at Eden Park in Auckland.

The 2023 World Cup kicks off with a doubleheader on July 20, with co-hosts New Zealand and Australia facing Norway and the Republic of Ireland, respectively.

Can Team USA repeat the World Cup victory?

The U.S. is seeking something big this year: becoming the first team in either the women’s or men’s game to take three consecutive World Cup titles after winning the 2015 and 2019 World Cups.

However, they are set to face a battle in their Group E pairings that includes Vietnam, Portugal, and Netherlands, whom they beat in the final in Lyon, France, in 2019.

Looking at their positive developments, the Americans seem ready to take on the Southern Hemisphere and return with another win. They will be led by star veterans, including the winner of the Golden Boot, Megan Rapinoe, Alex Morgan, Becky Sauerbrunn, and Alyssa Naeher- a blend of quality and experience. Additionally, another strong addition is the return of two-time World Cup champion Julie Ertz and 2022 NWSL MVP Sophia Smith ahead of the USA’s series vs. Ireland. After extended USWNT roster absences, they made their way back to action on April 8.

According to several sources, the defending champions are the favorites to win this year’s Tournament. They are widely regarded as the strongest team in the world.
