COPA AMÉRICA 2024

Who won the Golden Boot at the 2024 Copa América?

Argentina striker Lautaro Martínez capped an impressive club campaign with Inter Milan by finishing as this summer’s top goalscorer.

He may not have been a regular starter but few can doubt Lautaro Martínez’s credentials as a finisher. The Argentina striker came off the bench to score the only goal of the Copa América final, securing his side a record 16th title.

It also ensured that he finishes the tournament as the Golden Boot winner, having scored more goals than any other player at this summer’s Copa América.

He scored five goals but was typically started on the bench, with head coach Lionel Scaloni preferring the more energetic Julian Alvarez in the frontline. However Martínez’ quality is not in doubt and he proved it once again against Colombia.

Behind Martínez in the 2024 scoring charts is Venezuelan striker Salomon Rondon (three goals) and 13 players tied for third place with two goals apiece.

Who is the top scorer in Copa América history?

Ahead of this summer’s tournament there was speculation that Lionel Messi could add the Copa América scoring record to his lengthy list of individual achievements. Messi came into the tournament at No. 5 in the all-time list with 13 goals and finishes his Copa América career with 14, having scored just one goal in the semi-final against Canada.

Top spot is shared by two players, an Argentine and a Brazilian. Norberto Mendez (Argentina) and Zizinho (Brazil) each scored 17 goals in the competition, a tally that looks unlikely to be matched anytime soon. The only other active player in the top ten is Chile’s Eduardo Vargas, who, now 34 years old, is surely playing in the tournament for the last time.

The scoring record in the European Championship is 14 and is held by Cristiano Ronaldo, five more than any other player in Euros history. Ronaldo played in the tournament for the sixth time this summer but failed to score despite starting in each of Portugal’s games en route to a quarter-final exit. Behind him is French legend Michel Platini, who scored all nine of his Euros goals in the 1984 tournament.
