Why Chloe Kelly just became a Barbie doll for International Women’s Day
For International Women’s Day, Mattel has created a “Dream Team” of Barbie dolls that includes England national forward Chloe Kelly.

For years, young soccer fans have worn the jerseys of their heroes. Now they can put one on their Barbie.
In celebration of International Women’s Day, toy giant Mattel has turned England soccer star Chloe Kelly into one of its newest Barbie dolls, placing the Lionesses forward among a global lineup of female trailblazers.

From Euro hero to Barbie: Why Chloe Kelly’s new doll is a big moment for women’s soccer
Kelly is part of Barbie’s first-ever “Dream Team”, a group of women from sports, science, music and beyond who have broken barriers in their industries. For the 28-year-old forward, the honor represents more than a collectible doll. It’s a symbol of how far women’s soccer has come.
“To see a footballer with a Barbie doll shows that our sport is here to stay,” Kelly said while discussing the campaign.
The miniature version of Kelly is dressed in the England national team kit, celebrating her role as one of the defining figures of the modern England women’s national football team.

Her biggest moment came at the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022, when Kelly scored the dramatic winning goal in the final, a strike that helped deliver England’s historic championship and cemented her place in Lionesses history. Since then, Kelly has remained one of the most recognizable faces in the sport while playing professionally for Arsenal Women F.C.
Barbie’s new mission: real-life role models
Kelly’s doll is part of Mattel’s effort to spotlight women who inspire the next generation. The Barbie Dream Team includes global icons such as tennis legend Serena Williams, astronaut Kellie Gerardi and surfer Stephanie Gilmore.

For Barbie, a brand that has existed since 1959, the campaign reflects a push to represent more diverse careers and achievements.
Sports stars have become an especially important part of that effort as women’s athletics continue to surge in popularity worldwide. And Kelly’s inclusion speaks to the rapid rise of women’s soccer.
Just decades ago, the sport faced steep barriers in England, including a ban on women playing at official stadiums imposed by The Football Association that lasted from 1921 until 1971.
Today, the Lionesses are national icons, and young girls across the UK are signing up to play in record numbers. Kelly herself has become an advocate for grassroots football and youth participation, often speaking about the importance of inspiring the next generation.

That’s why seeing a professional footballer turned into a Barbie doll resonates far beyond the toy aisle. As Kelly put it, it’s a sign that two worlds, sports and childhood imagination, are finally colliding. And for the next generation of players, it sends a powerful message that their heroes don’t just belong on the field anymore. They belong on the toy shelf too.
