Why didn’t Robert Lewandowski want to face Bayern Munich and what did Joshua Kimmich say about it?

With the ‘Group of Death’ now set, the prolific striker will face his former team which is something he apparently didn’t want to do.

Having spent almost a decade with the German champions, the Polish goal machine knows his former club all too well. That’s precisely why he won’t be pleased to play against them in this year’s Champions League.

Robert Lewandowski didn’t want to face Bayern and now he will

Though it was a long and protracted affair, former Bayern Munnich striker Robert Lewandowski was finally able to complete his move to FC Barcelona earlier this summer and with that, pundits went crazy about the inevitable return to greatness for the Catalan club. That’s not to imply that there wasn’t good reason for celebration among the Culers, but those in the know approached the situation with a bit more caution. Indeed, Lewandowski himself was positive about what could be achieved with his new club, but at the same time steered clear of any grand declarations.

Of course, it was only a matter of time before the Polish poacher was asked how he felt about his new team and their chances against his former. Not surprisingly, Lewandowski was diplomatic in his answer, but left no doubt that he’d prefer not to see his former club too soon. Unfortunately for Lewandowski, with Barca being drawn in the ‘group of death’ with Bayern, his fears have now become a reality. Interestingly, one of his former teammates agreed with him, that it would be best for the sides not to meet.

Joshua Kimmich sympathizes with Robert Lewandowski

With Lewa’s comments now public, it didn’t take long for them to make the rounds and in turn garner a response. German international and Bayern Munich wing back Joshua Kimmich who is also now Bayern’s captain having taken over the responsibility from Lewandowski gave a short, but cheeky response to his former teammate’s comments. “Probably for a good reason,” was Kimmich’s reply and in truth the man has a point. When considering recent meetings between the two teams and the manner in which they have start this campaign, the Bavarians can only feel confident about their chances against the Catalans.

Yet, that was then and this is now. With the squad they have amassed in a short space of time and the kind of football we have seen played so far; it might not be an exaggeration to say that Barca are back in business. Of course, football like any other sport is a sport won and lost on the day. Can Bayern’s high-pressing attack unsettle Barca’s possession game? That’s the question to be answered, but what we know is we’re dying to find out.
