Why do Liverpool fans sing Dua Lipa’s song ‘One Kiss’?
Liverpool fans have gathered on the streets of Paris before their side face Real Madrid in the Champions League final on Saturday.
On 26 May 2018, Liverpool were preparing for their Champions League final against Real Madrid, with the players of both teams in their respective dressing rooms ahead of kick-off in Kyiv.
Liverpool fans engaged in a pre-match singalong as they eagerly awaited their side’s first Champions League final in 11 years.
Dua Lipa had been confirmed as the artist who’d perform the opening ceremony for the tournament’s finale. She took to the stage erected inside the pitch’s centre circle before her pre-match opening track ‘One Kiss’ – a song with Calvin Harris that had been released just over a month before the final in Ukraine.
A banner depicting Steven Gerrard kissing the Champions League trophy next to one of the song’s lines hung in the Liverpool supporters’ section of the ground as thousands of fans joined her singing the lyrics. And a tradition was born.
“One of the highlights of the night was definitely seeing the video of all the Liverpool fans chanting along to One Kiss afterwards. I felt very honoured,” Dua Lipa told Liverpoolfc.com in 2020.
“I was very lucky to have the support of people back home right there in the stadium in Kyiv. I’m still shocked when watching it back seeing all these fans singing along to my song!
“I’m always extremely grateful for the support. It’s heart-warming and I’m very lucky.”
Four years later, as Liverpool fans gathered on the streets of Paris before their side faced Real Madrid again, supporters of the Anfield outfit sang Dua Lipa’s ‘One Kiss’ on a warm, sunny day in the French capital.
Earlier this season, Liverpool players and fans also celebrated their 2021-22 Carabao Cup win by singing along to the lyrics of the popular song.
Which football team does Dua Lipa support?
Dua Lipa described herself as an “Honorary Liverpool supporter” in an interview with WIRED, and also went on to say that she “loves Liverpool, it’s always got a special place in my heart.”
In the same interview, she also said: “My dad and brother support Arsenal, and I think I would be getting in a lot of trouble if I said that I just support Liverpool.”
Should the Reds beat Madrid in Paris, ‘One Kiss’ will be heard around the French capital in the early hours of Sunday morning.
