Why does Megan Rapinoe dye her hair pink and blue?
The USWNT star decided to change her look just before the 2019 Women’s World Cup.
Megan Rapinoe is one of the biggest stars in the history of US soccer. At the age of 38, the Californian forward knows what it’s like to win just about everything, having won two World Cups, an Olympic gold medal, a Women’s Champions League and even a Ballon d’Or (2019).
Rapinoe’s final game
After a long and successful career, Rapinoe will say goodbye to the US national team in Chicago on Sunday in the match between the USA and South Africa. This is a hugely important moment in the player’s career, waving goodbye to the team that has given her perhaps the most joy in her life.
Rapinoe appeared before the 2019 World Cup with pink hair. Since then, Rapinoe’s is - along with Dennis Rodman’s - the most famous dyed hair in the world of sport.
Rapinoe’s hair: why pink and blue?
Pink and blue have been the two shades Rapinoe has had over the years. Far from being random colors, the choice of these colors has a logical meaning that the player explained at the time. “For me, having pink hair is a way of expressing the way I relate to beauty,” she said.
“When I’m on the pitch, I want to look beautiful. That’s a different form of beauty.”
She added: “I always tell myself: ‘look good, feel good and play good’, in that order. It was a fun way to express my style and my individuality. Obviously, at a World Cup, everything is so serious and stressful. It was a fun way to tell everyone to go to hell.”
