Why does PSG have a gold badge on their Champions League final jersey?
Paris Saint-Germain is the second club honored with a special, FIFA embroidered golden shield on their shirts. Here’s why.
Keen-eyed soccer fans will notice an extra detail on Paris Saint-Germain’s kit for this evening’s Champions League final in Budapest.
As the ‘home team’, Luis Enrique’s team will be wearing their familiar navy blue jersey with its red and white detailing. And on the chest just above the sponsors’ name will be an official, FIFA embroidered, golden shield.
The badge represents PSG’s triumph at the 2025 Intercontinental Cup - a tournament revived by FIFA in 2024. Champions League winners PSG faced Copa Libertadores winners Flamengo in the final in Al Rayyan, Qatar back in December. The game ended level at 1-1 after extra-time and was decided from the penalty spot.
Apart from gaining another addition to the club trophy room, there was another bonus for PSG, who became the second team to be awarded the FIFA gold crest as Intercontinental Cup champions.
Strict rules on badges
Under the Team Identifiers section of the rules and regulations, the only decorative elements allowed on shirts in major finals are official FIFA event badges in recognition of titles won.
Real Madrid, who lifted the new, inaugural Intercontinental Cup in 2024, is the only other team, along with PSG, who possess FIFA’s gold shield.
