Champions League

Why is Alphonso Davies not playing for Bayern Munich against PSG in the UEFA Champions League semifinal?

Davies started the first leg against PSG in Paris but was replaced at halftime. He isn’t in Vincent Kompany’s lineup for the return game.

Update:

Alphonso Davies has developed into one of the world’s best left-backs since joining Bayern Munich in 2019, although the 2025-26 season has not been his most productive. The Canadian international is only named among the substitutes for the German giants’ biggest game of the season so far at home to Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of the Champions League semifinal.

Davies’ injury setbacks shape season

Of course, Davies missed the start of the campaign after tearing his ACL in March last year. The 24-year-old’s first appearance did not come until a Champions League game against Sporting CP on Dec. 9, since when Bayern coach Vincent Kompany has been cautious with his return to full fitness.

Davies has featured in 22 games this season, but has started only eight times. His quest to get back to 100% has not been helped by a hamstring injury suffered at the end of February, which kept him on the sidelines for five matches.

Limited starts, but still a key option

The former Vancouver Whitecaps defender started the first leg of the semifinal in Paris but was replaced at halftime by Konrad Laimer. The Austrian international has been selected to start Wednesday’s second leg in Munich, although Davies will hope to have an impact from the bench later in the game.

Champions League ambitions still alive

The Canadian is hoping to win his 16th trophy with Bayern and lift the Champions League for the second time, having been part of the squad that won the covid-19-affected tournament in 2020.
