Will Alexis Vega play for Mexico in the 2023 Gold Cup?
Doubts had been raised after the player was ruled out of the Nations League semi-final game against the USMNT.
Back in January, Chivas forward Alexis Vega underwent surgery, which became necessary after a knee injury picked up in a game against Atlético San Luis. He knew then that he was going to miss a lot of football and today it was confirmed that he would not form part of Mexico’s Gold Cup squad.
Vega kisses Gold Cup goodbye
A statement had previously been made by the national team that the Chivas winger would not be available for the match against the United States in the Nations League semi-finals, and that his participation in the continental tournament was uncertain. Finally, the news was confirmed that the recent runner-up of the Clausura 2023 would be returning to his club to continue his rehabilitation process.
The bad news comes on the back of the continued underperformance from El Tri in the Nations League, which serves as a precursor to the Gold Cup of North and Central America.
If some of the selected players were already being questioned due to their poor showings, the absence of one of the most promising stars in the squad further complicates things for Diego Cocca. Pressure is already building for him to turn things around quickly.
