LAFC and Carlos Vela are just one game away from another MLS Cup triumph.

If they beat Columbus Crew on Saturday they will become just the fourth team in MLS history to retain the title. Club captain Vela will be leading the team out at Lower.com Field in what could be his final game for the club.

The Mexican’s contract expires at the end of 2023 and, now 34 years old, may no longer be a guaranteed starter for the team going forward. Vela received a standing ovation when substituted late on in the Western Conference final against Houston Dynamo last weekend, sparking more speculation about his future.

However AS USA sources have revealed that LAFC are considering offering Vela a contract extension. The Mexican would have to be willing to accept a reduction in his $4.5 million annual salary, but he is keen to extend his six-year stint in Los Angeles.

What did Steve Cherundolo say about Carlos Vela?

LAFC are on the brink of making MLS history with back-to-back MLS Cup triumphs. Head coach Steve Cherundolo will become just the third coach to retain the title if LAFC beat Columbus on Saturday.

Cherundolo has tweaked the team’s style of play this year, with a greater emphasis on counter-attacking. Denis Bouanga has thrived in those moments of transition and Vela’s intelligence and eye for a pass have been crucial to unlocking his teammate’s talents.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Cherundolo suggested that he is eager to keep Vela at the club.

“I love working with Carlos, he is a great person,” the LAFC boss said. “Every day it is a pleasure to see that left foot, whether in training or in games, it is something special.”

“But his future depends on him and LAFC. I will find out on January 13 when the preseason begins,” he added.

Vela may have to accept a less central role if he remains at BMO Stadium for 2024 but, regardless of the result on Saturday, his place in LAFC history is already assured.
