The Mexican national team have already agreed to hire Diego Cocca as their new head coach and it has been reported that FMF (Mexican Soccer Federation) chiefs have been in negotiations in an attempt to ensure that Tigres, the Argentinian’s current club, are disrupted as little as possible. However, those discussions appear to have been futile, with Los Auriazules set to face their worst fears.

Cocca set to leave Tigres with immediate effect

According to ESPN, Cocca has already resigned from his position as Tigres boss, allowing him to join Mexico with immediate effect as their preparations for the 2026 World Cup get underway. The agreement between the Argentine and El Tri is expected to made official imminently, which means that Cocca won’t take charge of Tigres’ matchday six Clausura 2023 clash against Pumas, scheduled for Saturday, February 11 at 8:05 p.m. ET.

As a result, the suggestion that had been made in some quarters that Cocca would combine both roles until the end of Clausura 2023 can be ruled out. Tigres will therefore have to look for a new coach just three months after hiring the Argentine, who won two Liga MX titles with Atlas in 2021 and 2022.

How many Tigres matches did Diego Cocca take charge of?

Cocca was appointed as Tigres boss on 16 November 2022, just over a month after leaving Atlas. He took charge of four Copa por México games and five Liga MX fixtures. In those nine games, he oversaw four wins, four draws and just one defeat, to Chivas in the cup. The Argentine leaves Tigres a point behind Clausura 2023 leaders Pachuca and Monterrey after three wins and two draws in five league matches.
