Liverpool take on Luton in the Premier League on Sunday and winger Luis Díaz could make a return to action for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The parents of Díaz were kidnapped on Saturday 28 October in Barrancas, La Guajira, Colombia. A few hours after the kidnapping, the player’s mother, Cilenis Marulanda, was rescued by authorities, however, his father, Luis Manuel Díaz, remains missing.

The Colombian government provided an update on Díaz senior on Thursday, reporting that Colombian guerillas the National Liberation Army (ELN) have been responsible for the kidnapping.

“We demand that the ELN immediately releases Mr Luis Manuel Díaz and we say as of now that they are entirely responsible for securing his life and integrity,” read the statement.

“We have official knowledge that the kidnapping of Luis Manuel Díaz and Cilenis Marulanda, father and mother of the football player Luis Fernando Díaz Marulanda, on October 28 in Barrancas, department of La Guajira, was perpetrated by a unit belonging to the ELN.”

Klopp provides update on Díaz

On Friday, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said that the option is there for Díaz to feature against Luton this weekend.

“If he feels right, he will be with us,” said Klopp.

“You can see he didn’t sleep a lot. The news from Colombia gives us a little bit of hope. I cannot say what we will do. It’s up to him, if he makes himself available or not.

“We cannot force the Luis situation. It is not in our hands. We’re all waiting together for good news.”
