Will out-of-contract Roger Martínez leave América for Boca Juniors?

As Martínez nears the end of his Club América contract, Boca are among the sides looking to sign the Colombian forward on a free transfer.

Out of contract in June, Club América’s Roger Martínez is free to talk to other clubs - and sources close to the forward have confirmed to AS that Argentinians Boca Juniors are among his suitors.

Can Boca afford the América player?

Boca’s vice-president, playing legend Juan Román Riquelme, is known to be a long term admirer of Martínez, who has fallen out of favour at América.

This newspaper’s sources caution, however, that no firm progress has been made over a potential free transfer to the Bombonera.

While Boca’s interest in Martínez is long-running, it remains unclear whether the 35-time Argentinian champions have sufficient financial muscle to make the 28-year-old an offer that will persuade him to join the club.

Martínez a rare starter at América

Martínez, who signed for América in 2018, has made nine appearances for Las Águilas in the Liga MX’s Clausura 2023 tournament - but only one has been as a starter. He was also restricted to just two América starts in the Apertura 2022.

Capped 25 times by Colombia, Martínez has scored 35 goals and supplied 17 assists in 159 games for América.

In his time in Mexico City, the 13-time domestic champions have won the Liga MX Apertura 2018, the Copa MX Clausura 2019 and the 2019 Campeón de Campeones.
