Ahead of the huge Nations League semi-final clash between Mexico and the USMNT at Allegiant Stadium, the permanent names for the job of head coach have been swirling around. Now it is the turn of Patrick Vieira, who, according to various reports, has an interest in taking control of The Stars and Stripes.

Various sources across the world, including ESPN, have published information that puts the ex-Arsenal captain firmly in the running for the role that is currently occupied by B. J. Callaghan, who originally joined the US setup as an assistant to Gregg Berhalter back in 2019. In May 2023, it was announced that Callaghan would step up as head coach after Anthony Hudson’s previous promotion a year earlier.

Which managers have the USMNT been linked with?

Back to Vieira. The Frenchman has managed a trio of interesting clubs across the world, with spells at Nice and Crystal Palace after cutting his teeth at New York City FC in MLS, making him an interesting choice for the head coach of the national team. It is worth noting at this point that plenty of names have been suggested for the role, including Vieira’s compatriot, Thierry Henry, as well as former Leeds boss Jesse Marsch and even current AS Roma head coach, José Mourinho.

Mexico are the USMNT’s next big challenge and are the ones in the way of a potential Nations League final. The Allegiant Stadium is set to hold the clash that could see the US further assert their dominance over their rivals, something which holds further significance given the upcoming Gold Cup, which will be overseen from a USMNT point of view by B. J. Callaghan.

When will the USMNT appoint a manager?

In a few words: nobody is quite sure. What is certain is that they have taken their time in appointing a permanent manager, something which has caught the eye of many as the clock ticks on. However, it must be said that they hope to have a coach in place for the upcoming friendlies against Germany and Ghana, which will be in October on US soil. After that comes the Nations League 23/24 and in November they will also be looking to secure their place at the 2024 Copa América.
