Will there be an MLS Cup Halftime Show?
The New York Red Bulls head to Tinseltown to take on the LA Galaxy this weekend.
The 2024 MLS season reaches the finale this weekend as the LA Galaxy and the New York Red Bulls go head-to-head in MLS Cup.
It’s the pinnacle of domestic club soccer in the United States and both teams go into the game with an eye on the history books. The Galaxy can extent their lead in the all-time standings and add to their five previous MLS Cup wins. For the Red Bulls, it’s a chance to finally clinch a championship.
As the higher seed LA Galaxy have hosting duties, bringing the nation’s eyes to Dignity Health Sports Park. In the past MLS Cups have featured a Halftime Show but last year’s edition in Columbus did not.
However, the Galaxy enlisted American electronic music duo SLANDER to provide pre-game and halftime entertainment for their Western Conference Final last weekend. That was only announced in the days before the game, meaning that we could still learn of some halftime entertainment for MLS Cup.
Who has appeared at MLS Cup Halftime Show in the past?
The halftime show has a rich tradition in American sports and in US-based soccer too. The 2026 World Cup, hosted in the United State, Mexico and Canada, is set to have a Halftime Show for the first time in FIFA’s flagship tournament.
In the past MLS Cup has, sporadically, featured its own Halftime Show. The most significant of these appearances came in 1999 when Christian Aguilera performed at Foxboro Stadium, Massachusetts. DC United wrapped up their third MLS Cup victory with a 2-0 victory and Aguilera sung the pregame national anthem and performed at halftime.
Other performers included JoJo (2011), Jimmy Eat World (2007) and Michelle Branch (2003). Perhaps the most eye-catching of all the MLS Cup performances came in the inaugural year when New England Revolution defender Alexi Lalas performed the national anthem ahead of kickoff.
We won’t see anything quite like that for the 2024 edition but it wouldn’t be a big surprise to see the Galaxy organise something for halftime.
