Aitana Bonmatí Conca (Sant Pere de Ribes, 1998) has taken on the leadership role in the Barcelona team. Despite her youth (25 years old), she is a veteran on the pitch. With 8 seasons of football under her belt, the midfielder has become undroppable for every game. This is even more apparent in a season in which Alexia’s absence could have taken its toll on the team; nothing is further from reality. Aitana has not hidden herself and has instead decided to thrive in the role of team leader.

The talented midfielder has spent years showing that she has the capacity to be the difference in a game. But the shadow of the best player in the world is long and perhaps it does not let one of the best players in Spanish football shine as much: Aitana has come on leaps and bounds in recent years. Not only in terms of her statistics, but her presence in the eleven. Such a talented player, perhaps seen as weak to fight against the physique of the bigger presences across Europe, has evolved not only to be able to compete and win physically, but also technically.

Aitana’s winning mentality

Stubborn like no other, Aitana has given herself the task of being the best in the world, and she’s on her way. As strict as they come in terms of her diet and rest cycle, she leaves nothing to chance, neither the psychological nor the physical aspects, where she has worked hard to keep up with the demands. Aitana was born with plenty of natural talent, but that does not stop her from trying to improve. So much so that she continues to work tirelessly to no longer have a ‘weaker’ foot. During the games, this is clear to see.

A new goals record this season?

Aitana is only three goals away from beating her best ever goals record. She has already scored 15 goals in all competitions and has eleven assists this season, just a handful away from the 18 goals she managed in the previous campaign. But most importantly, she scores when her team requires.

The midfielder has scored against Real Madrid, Real Sociedad and Levante as well as bagging a double in the Super Cup final. Oh, and she has scored against every opponent so far in the Champions League. As well as being awarded the fourth best player in FIFA’s ‘The Best’, she came fifth in the Ballon d’Or rankings. The name of Aitana is one that is gaining ground and one that is turning into a leader for her side.
