Cocca kicks off Mexico tenure against Suriname

Cocca, who was appointed as Gerardo Martino’s replacement in February, has opted to take a group of chiefly Mexico-based players to Paramaribo for Thursday’s CONCACAF Nations League clash with Suriname.

Along with 11 other members of Cocca’s 34-man squad for the March internationals, Salernitana keeper Ochoa has remained behind in Mexico to prepare for the home Nations League encounter with Jamaica on Sunday.

Acevedo or Rodríguez to get gloves in Paramaribo

Santos Laguna’s Carlos Acevedo or Tijuana’s José Antonio Rodríguez will start in goal against Suriname, as the sides meet in League A Group A.

Given Acevedo’s greater international experience - he has four Mexico caps to Rodríguez’s none - the 26-year-old appears likelier to get the nod at the Dr. Ir. Franklin Essed Stadion. He has been in excellent form for Santos in the Clausura 2023 tournament, with his total of 49 saves the highest in the Liga MX.

Rodríguez, 30, is in the senior Mexico squad for the first time in his career.
