Women’s Euro 2022: England vs Austria match preview

Two-time Euro runners up England will face Austria at the Old Trafford Stadium on Wednesday as they look to make it all the way in 2022.

The Women’s Euro 2022 begins today with England taking on Austria in Group A, at the Old Trafford Stadium in London to open the competition.

Austria will play in the tournament for just the second time ever. In 2017, they finished third. England will be playing in their ninth Euro and have been runners up twice, looking to make it all the way this time.

England vs Austria: Head to head

England has won all seven games they’ve played against Austria, scoring 22 goals and conceding just one. Their most recent game was in November 2021, in the 2023 Women’s World Cup qualifiers, in which England beat Austria 1-0.

In their warmup friendlies last month, the Lionesses secured three wins in three games, including a big 5-1 win against last year’s champions, the Netherlands. Meanwhile, Austria suffered a 2-1 defeat to Denmark, but then two consecutive wins against Montenegro and Belgium.

“Pressure is a privilege,” said England’s team captain Leah Williamson. “So it’s something we’re embracing... That’s part of the job. But it doesn’t mean we won’t enjoy it at the same time.”

In their last five games, England has won all five with 27 goals scored and just one conceded. In Austria’s last five games, they won four and lost one, with 17 goals scored and three conceded.

England is undefeated in the last 14 games since Sarina Wiegman took over as head coach. Though many bookies had Spain winning the competition, England was a close second, and now, with Alexia Putellas out for Spain, it looks like England are the new favorites to go all the way.
