World Cup 2022: Mexico vs Argentina - everything you need to know
El Tri will take on Lionel Messi and Argentina in their Group C World Cup match on Saturday as they try to make it to the knockout stage.
After a 0-0 tie to Poland to open up their World Cup group stage, El Tri have a challenge ahead of them when they face Lionel Messi and Argentina on Saturday at Lusail Stadium in Qatar at 2 p.m. ET.
Mexico has reached the knockout stage in the last seven World Cups. This year though, that fate doesn’t look too certain. Argentina suffered one of the greatest World Cup upsets when they lost to Saudi Arabia in their opener, and they’ll surely be looking to bounce back against Mexico.
Argentina beat Mexico in the World Cup in its first-ever edition in 1930, have eliminated them twice in their last 16 matches, and remain undefeated in their last ten meetings since 2004. The results of their first game make this matchup a pivotal one as far as Group C qualification.
Violence in the streets of Qatar
Ahead of the match, there were some fights that broke out on the streets of Qatar on Wednesday night as fans of both Argentina and Mexico clashed. Video footage shows punches being thrown and insult being thrown out about Argentinian Lionel Messi. There have been reports of injuries, though nothing has been confirmed. This is concerning news ahead of the match which is expected to have 80,000 fans present.
