World Cup 2026 ticket frenzy: U.S., Mexico and Canada see record interest

FIFA announced staggering numbers for the first ticket lottery of the 2026 World Cup, which will be staged across the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The lottery for the initial phase of ticket sales officially closed on Sept. 19. This early window allowed Visa cardholders to register for a chance to buy tickets before the general public when sales begin later this month and in early October.

These countries lead “unprecedented” demand for tickets

More than 4.5 million people worldwide entered the draw, according to FIFA. Requests came from 216 countries, with the host nations, United States, Mexico and Canada, leading the way in applications.

Rounding out the top 10 were Germany, England, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Spain and Italy, reflecting the global pull of the biggest event in soccer.

Infantino calls it “the biggest World Cup ever”

FIFA president Gianni Infantino celebrated the unprecedented response, noting that this will be the first World Cup hosted by three countries and expanded to 48 teams.

“These are not just remarkable figures but also a powerful statement,” Infantino said. “Everyone wants to be part of the World Cup, the biggest, most inclusive and exciting event ever. From Canada, Mexico and the United States to nations large and small on every continent, fans are once again showing that the passion for soccer truly unites the world.”
