A journalist, soccer fanatic and Shrewsbury Town fan, Will’s love for the game has withstood countless playoff final losses. After graduating from the University of Liverpool he wrote for a number of British publications before joining AS USA in 2020. His work focuses on the Premier League, LaLiga, MLS, Liga MX and the global game.
Update:

What were you doing when you were 14 years old? That’s the age at which Cavan Sullivan made his professional debut for the Philadelphia Union, becoming the youngest player to play in MLS.

Since his record-breaking debut, Sullivan has agreed a move to Manchester City when he turns 18 and has become a regular for the United States’ age-group teams. Now, he’s eyeing a breakthrough season in MLS and a first senior call-up for USMNT.

Sullivan, still only 16 years old, has become an integral part of Philadelphia Union II and has an impressive scoring record for a midfielder. However he is yet to cement himself in the Union first team and will be hoping that 2026 can be his year.

Speaking on CBS Golazo this week, Sullivan was asked about his goals for the year. He didn’t hold back, listing some very bold aims.

“I’m just going to say it. I hope for a flying start to the MLS, and then maybe I get a U.S. Men’s National Team call-up,” the 16-year-old said. “A lot of you will think that’s a far dream. I probably said this again last year.”

“That’s what I’m pushing for. So, a lot of work going to go into preseason and, hopefully, I can make my impact in the MLS right away.”

A late push for Mauricio Pochettino’s World Cup roster is almost certainly out of the question now, even for a player as prodigiously talented as Sullivan. He will be watching on as the US team competes on home soil and he’s looking forward to the impact that the tournament will have.

Sullivan said: “It’s going to be huge. It’s a great tournament, and I think kids will obviously see what this game can do when they see 80,000 fans at a game.”
