Violence broke out last Sunday in several parts of the state of Jalisco following reports of the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). In the aftermath, some fans questioned whether Guadalajara’s status as a host city for the 2026 World Cup could be affected.

In recent days, FIFA and its president, Gianni Infantino, had already made clear that the “Pearl of the West” would not be removed from the tournament. Infantino traveled to Mexico to meet with President Claudia Sheinbaum and reaffirm that position.

“I had an excellent conversation earlier today with Mexico President, Claudia Sheinbaum,” Infantino wrote on X. “I reiterated our full confidence in the host country and look forward to it staging all scheduled matches there at what will be the most inclusive and the greatest WorldCup ever.“

What did Sheinbaum say at the morning press conference?

During her morning press conference, Sheinbaum revealed that her administration has been in contact with FIFA officials regarding security plans for the upcoming tournament.

“Thank FIFA and Gianni Infantino. I haven’t spoken to him personally, but our team has been in contact with him, explaining that there is no problem. Yesterday he said, ‘The host is Mexico, the host cities are the ones already selected, and there is no change,’” the president said
