Gritty, historic and nearly disastrous: The USMNT’s wild night against Bosnia and Herzegovina

The Americans survived a chaotic second half and a costly Folarin Balogun red card to secure just their second World Cup knockout win in modern history.

Estados Unidos Update:

The United States was the last of the World Cup hosts left to take care of business. Mauricio Pochettino’s squad simply couldn’t afford to slip up, not after spending two years preparing specifically for high-stakes afternoons like this one in the heart of Silicon Valley. It wasn’t pretty, but it was monumental.

Much like their co-hosts, the USMNT made history: securing just their second-ever World Cup knockout win—their first since defeating Mexico in 2002—and meeting the baseline expectation set by both the public and their Argentine manager. It should have been straightforward, but a reckless moment from Balogun, who had found the back of the net earlier, injected unnecessary drama into the match. A flawless afternoon in Santa Clara nearly flirted with disaster.

Pochettino rolled out his elite starting XI, anchored by the five-man backline that has defined his tenure. Antonee Robinson and Sergiño Dest pushed high as wingbacks, while Tim Ream, Chris Richards, and Kaden Freeman anchored the defense to stretch the team’s tactical range. Truth be told, not much happened between the opening whistle and the first hydration break, save for a routine Ermedin Demirovic strike that Matt Freese comfortably smothered, and a misfired cross from Robinson. Beyond that, Christian Pulisic looked stranded out of his preferred element, locked down as if marooned on Alcatraz with Amar Dedic and Nikola Katic acting as his wardens. Folarin Balogun’s brilliant turn and clinical striker’s finish was eventually chalked off by referee Raphael Claus for a razor-thin infraction—his left foot straying just inches offside. It was merely a warning shot.

Moments later, Pulisic finally gave Benjamin Gigovic the slip, nearly turning a clever Malik Tillman backheel into the opening goal of a glorious California afternoon. That was the second warning. Then came Balogun’s redemption: a deft flick from Weston McKennie sprung Tillman, the Leverkusen midfielder drove into the space, and Balogun buried the finish after a horrific miscue from Tarik Muharemovic. The USMNT had finally found their rhythm. Soon after, another brilliant sequence from Tillman forced Dest all the way to the endline, resulting in a Balogun strike that rattled the crossbar—drawing applause from Pochettino, whose signature West Coast style looks less like a fashion choice and more like an unbeaten good luck charm.

The Twilight of a Legend

Edin Dzeko lasted just five minutes into the second half. A desperate burst of pace to beat Freeman to a loose ball tore through whatever was left of his hamstring. It was a somewhat undignified, anti-climactic exit for the greatest icon of post-Balkan War Bosnian soccer. “The Dragons” hadn’t even recovered from the symbolic loss of their captain—or Balogun’s opening goal—before the Monaco striker found himself in trouble. In a physical challenge with Muharemovic, Balogun caught the Bosnian center-back directly on the right Achilles with his studs. Referee Raphael Claus judged it a straight red, though he arguably overlooked the natural momentum of a 50-50 challenge on the ball. With that, the USMNT’s star goalscorer was sent heading toward the Bay to the tune of Bon Jovi.

The United States was happyto survive by turning the match into a gritty, physical dogfight. Christian Pulisic managed to bundle the ball into the back of the net, though it was quickly waved off for an offside infraction, sending Bosnia manager Sergej Barbarez into a frenzy over what he perceived as a non-stop refereeing bias. Yet, Pochettino’s men finally saw the light at the other end of the Golden Gate Bridge when Tillman delicately curled a strike from just outside the right corner of the Bosnian box. Nikola Vasilj dove low from his line; the strike itself was gorgeous—reminiscent of a classic Diego Maradona special from his Napoli days—but the goalkeeper simply lacked the strength to parry it away.

Pochettino turned to his bench just before Bosnia could throw the kitchen sink at them, bringing on Gregg Berhalter and Ricardo Pepi at the perfect moment. Tarik Alajbegovic nearly curled a cross-shot into Matt Freese’s netting from the right flank before Gio Reyna—always a lightning rod for drama—stepped into the midfield to possess the ball and bleed out the clock. A low, double-salvo from Ermin Mahmic made the final seconds tick by in agonizingly slow motion for the American Outlaws and the faithful in attendance, until the patriotic chants of “U-S-A! U-S-A!” finally echoed across the stadium. Mission accomplished.
