Has Lamine Yamal disappointed at the 2026 World Cup? His impact goes beyond goals and assists

The Barcelona teenager has only one goal in the tournament, but does that tell the full story of Spain’s run to the final?

Lamine Yamal has been one of Spain’s most closely scrutinized players at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His attacking numbers, one goal and no assists, have left some fans disappointed, especially given the expectations surrounding one of the tournament’s biggest stars. But a closer look at his performances paints a different picture. While the statistics may not jump off the page, his influence on Spain’s overall play has been far more significant than the box score suggests.

The Barcelona winger hasn’t produced the most dominant World Cup of his young career, but he has hardly been a peripheral figure. Against top opponents including Uruguay, Austria, Portugal, Belgium and France, he has consistently been the focal point of opposing defenses. His ability to draw multiple defenders and create space for teammates has forced opponents to adjust their game plans throughout the tournament.

Defenses have built their game plans around him

Several defenders tasked with containing Lamine Yamal struggled so badly that they were eventually substituted. Uruguay’s Sanabria, Belgium’s Maxim De Cuyper and France’s Lucas Digne were all replaced after repeatedly failing to deal with his pace and dribbling. Even against Portugal, arguably his quietest performance of the tournament, he relentlessly attacked Nuno Mendes until the Portuguese fullback was forced off through injury and replaced by Nélson Semedo.

Lamine Yamal’s impact has also extended well beyond the official statistics.

Against Belgium, he helped create Spain’s opening goal by drawing defenders before Pedro Porro found Fabián Ruiz. In the semifinal against France, he won the penalty that opened the scoring and also had what would have been one of the goals of the tournament ruled out. Neither play counted as an assist or goal, but both played a crucial role in Spain’s success.

The numbers reveal more than goals and assists

His underlying statistics also tell an interesting story.

Against Belgium, Lamine Yamal completed 83% of his passes, attempted six shots, completed four dribbles and drew four fouls. Against Austria, he finished with a 90% pass completion rate, created two key chances and was named Player of the Match.

Against Portugal, he played all 90 minutes, made six ball recoveries and remained heavily involved despite constant defensive attention. In the semifinal against France, he again made a major contribution by winning a penalty, creating a big chance, delivering a key pass and completing 83% of his passes.

According to Opta, Lamine Yamal is also averaging 1.51 expected goals involvement (xG) per game, another indication that he continues to play a central role in creating dangerous scoring opportunities for Spain.

Lamine Yamal brushes off the criticism

The 19-year-old has also dismissed the growing debate over his goal tally.

Everyone has become obsessed with goals. I only scored one goal at the European Championship, and now I’ve scored one here too,” he said recently.

With only the World Cup final remaining, one conclusion seems clear. Lamine Yamal has not been the tournament’s standout player, nor has he been Spain’s most decisive performer. But his contribution has been considerably greater than his goal and assist totals suggest. For a Spain team that has reached the World Cup final, his influence has been constant, even if it has been less obvious than that of some of his teammates.
