Iran’s presence at the 2026 World Cup isn’t guaranteed, though it hasn’t been ruled out, either. After the head of the Iranian federation said current circumstances make it difficult for the team to travel to the U.S. - and after President Trump said Iran’s delegation is “welcome” but he cannot ensure its safety - a solution has been mooted: a change of venue.

Iranian soccer chief Mehdi Taj has claimed that Team Melli - whose three group games are all set to take place in the U.S. - could instead play in co-host nation Mexico.

“We are negotiating with FIFA”

“Once Trump explicitly declared that he cannot guarantee the safety of the Iranian national team, we will not travel to the United States,” Taj said in a message posted on the X account of the Iranian embassy in Mexico. He added: “We are negotiating with FIFA for Iran’s World Cup matches to be played in Mexico.”

However, FIFA has issued a statement indicating it will hold all national teams to the World Cup schedule established in last year’s tournament draw. “FIFA is in regular contact with all participating member associations, including IR Iran, to discuss planning for the FIFA World Cup 2026,” world soccer’s governing body said. “FIFA is looking forward to all participating teams competing as per the match schedule announced on 6 December 2025.”

Iran due for trio of U.S. group games

Drawn in Group G - alongside Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand - Iran is scheduled to play two round-robin matches in Los Angeles and another in Seattle. However, the ongoing war involving the U.S, Israel and Iran could force significant changes to those plans. It remains to be seen whether FIFA will agree and how it might adjust an already established calendar and host‑city lineup.

Jointly hosted by the U.S., Mexico and Canada, the 2026 World Cup is due to kick off on June 11, with the final in New Jersey taking place six weeks later, on July 19. Iran’s games are currently scheduled for June 15 (vs New Zealand in L.A.); June 21 (vs Belgium in L.A.); and June 26 (vs Egypt in Seattle).
